Ken G.L. Simpson, FIET, M.Phil, C.Eng.
A familiar name in Functional Safety, Ken started his career designing automatic flight control systems with Marconi Avionics and British Aerospace PLC. For the ensuing thirty years, he has been directly involved in the design and supply of Control and Safety Systems for the process industry.
For the better part of two decades, he has concentrated his efforts chairing multiple PHSERs, HAZOPs and undertaken SIL Targeting and SIL Verification in Oil and Gas, Petrochemical, Power and other industries. He has also undertaken many Safety Integrity Level (SIL) audits on products, contracting companies and operating sites and is a UKAS Functional Safety Technical Engineer.
Ken’s specialist areas concern Control Engineering, Mathematical Modelling, System Reliability Analysis and Hydraulic Control System Analysis and Design. His impressive reputation has allowed inclusion on many professional institutions whose job it is to influence and set parameters relating to programmable electronic safety systems. Ken is currently a UK member of The IEC 61508 Committee (General Functional Safety Standard for Electrical Based Safety Systems), The IEC 61511 Committee (process industry sector specific of IEC 61508), a member of The IEC 61165 (Marcov) committee and a committee member of The IGAS E Programmable Safety System.
Ken is a recognised authority on reliability issues and has published many articles concerning high integrity systems. He co-authored the book ‘Safety Critical Systems Handbook’ which is now in its fifth edition – this can be purchased on Amazon.
