Overview

The key objectives of the Workshop are to provide Senior Managers with an overview of:

  • The key international standards that constitute accepted good practice in relation to the achievement of functional safety (IEC 61508/IEC 61511)
  • The technical issues in achieving a tolerable risk so far as they affect the decisions
    they have to take in their role as senior managers
  • The compliance requirements of IEC61508/IEC 61511 in the context of their role as senior managers.

Course Learning Objectives

The workshop will be based on a presentation with facilitated interactive discussion. The
coverage will include:

  1. The fundamentals of functional safety including overview of IEC 61508/IEC 61511
  2. Legal framework
  3. The IEC 61508/IEC 61511 Safety Lifecycles
  4. International aspect of IEC 61508/IEC 61511 and the role that the USA has played in its development
  5. Compliance requirements to IEC 61511 (Technical requirements, Competence, Functional Safety Assessment, Verification and Validation)
  6. Corporate Risk Policy & achievement of ALARP
  7. Management/justification/auditability of risk parameters (SIS/SIF, Other Protection Layers, BPCS information & Conditional Modifiers)
  8. Interactive sessions enabling discussion of topics such as:
    Staff Competence

    1. Importance of traceability
    2. Importance of Proof Testing
    3. Importance of end user knowledge to secure optimum solutions regarding functional safety matters which might have significant resource implications
    4. Criteria for suppliers of elements/subsystems/systems considering their
      capability
